A leak claims that the upcoming Google Pixel Watch 4 will be equipped with the same chipset as its predecessor.
Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 4 alongside the Pixel 10 series next month, and while much has been said about the smartphones, little is known about the watch aside from its possible colours. However, some more information about the wearable has started to surface, namely regarding its chipset and battery capacities.
According to a report by Android Authority, the Pixel Watch 4 will come in two sizes, just like the current generation. The 45mm model is codenamed “kenari”, or FK23, while the smaller 41mm model gets the “meridian” moniker, or FME23. And as per usual, there will be WiFi and LTE variants. As for the chipset, the report claims that Google is equipping the wearable with a Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset. If that sounds familiar, it’s because this is the same processor used in the Pixel Watch 3. This may come as disappointing news to those hoping for an upgrade, but there are a few reasons for keeping the same chipset.
For starters, the next Qualcomm wearable processor is still in the works and isn’t ready yet. This leaves Exynos as an alternative, but it is also unclear whether the Exynos W series chips are exclusive to Samsung. Google used an Exynos chip for the first Pixel Watch, but has not used one since. And of course, the company is also reportedly looking to switch to its own custom Tensor chips next year.
