Anthony Albanese has heaped praise on Collingwood for backing the Voice to Parliament, after Jacinta Price reacted to the AFL team's announcement by telling sports clubs to 'stay the hell out of politics'.

Anthony Albanese has declared it is"fair" for sports clubs to express their views on the Voice to Parliament after the Collingwood Football Club publicly backed the proposal.

Mr Albanese was asked during an interview with ABC Radio Melbourne's Rafael Epstein about whether sporting clubs backing the yes vote was fair to fans who will vote no. The Prime Minister praised Collingwood for issuing a"principled statement" outlining why the club's board had reached its decision to back the Voice.

"The board's support for a First Nations Voice to Parliament is a natural progression of its commitment to doing and being better," the statement said. "The club has engaged First Nations experts to present on both the YES and NO campaigns to its people. The Club will continue to listen and learn to understand the experiences of First Nations people."

"Sports codes, clubs, they need to stay the hell out of politics and stick to sport," she told Sky News Australia host Paul Murray on Thursday.
