San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is getting its first new memorial in 30-plus years: a garden commemorating people with breast cancer.

It’s taken eight years, coordination between multiple groups, and countless planning sessions, but San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park will soon open its first new memorial since the National AIDS Memorial Grove began in 1991. Bay Area Young Survivors — a nonprofit support community for young people with breast cancer — has dreamt-up and funded the memorial garden, which is scheduled to open in mid-2024.

’ vision for a memorial first sprouted in 2015, following the death of one of its members who had loved gardening, Agha told SFGATE. The group approached San Francisco Recreation and Park and began the long process of finding the right space and design. “Cancer is so ubiquitous in our society, so the idea was to create a beautiful space that anybody could relate to and engage with,” Agha said.

was a lifeline,” she said. “It was a group of people who could understand me, where I could ask any questions, where nothing was too personal.” Young people with cancer often face very different challenges than folks who get diagnosed later in life: “Instead of talking about grandkids, we’re dealing with issues like fertility or dating — all these really complicated issues,” Agha said.
