The Avon-by-the-Sea Police Department said a 39-year-old man from Teaneck died that morning while trying to save his daughter from a rip current, but did not confirm whether it was Batista. AOfficers were called to the Sylvania Avenue beach at 8:35 a.m after getting a report of two swimmers in distress, according to Avon police Capt. Tony Pecelli. Rescue swimmers began searching for the pair and 10 minutes later found the girl and rescued her from the water, police said.
A short time later, the rescuers found a man who was submerged and pulled him from the water. After starting life-saving efforts on the beach, the man was brought to nearby Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Pecelli said.
