Months of training and life lessons culminated in a 5K for the afterschool program.
Girls raced ahead at the start of the Girls on the Run DFW Metroplex 5K at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie on Nov. 20, 2021. The group has another 5K planned for April 23.Amid a flurry of pink, glitter and pom-poms, parents gathered in a parking lot in the frosty morning to cheer their elementary-school-age daughters as they dashed across the finish line.
The local organization behind the 5K aims to help girls find confidence and joy through an afterschool program that coaches running and fosters a mentoring relationship. The program also aims at building healthy habits and addressing issues many young girls face in school, such as bullying. “Sometimes your legs get a little tired, but it’s OK,” participant Isabella Robledo said. “Keep going and enjoy the experience. I learn a lot of things, for example dealing with bullies, and how to be positive and have confidence in myself.”
Her coach, Beth Shier of North Fort Worth, says that she drew inspiration from Isabella right before race time. Since its establishment, the local Girls on the Run has served more than 8,500 girls from schools, recreation and community centers, and other settings. The program is noncompetitive in nature, and any girl can participate, regardless of athletic ability.
