A 39-year-old man died and a girl is hospitalized after being pulled from the ocean off Avon-by-the-Sea on Friday morning, authorities said. Officers were called to the Sylvania Avenue beach at 8:35 a.m after getting a report of two swimmers in distress, Avon police said. Rescue swimmers began searching for the pair and 10 minutes later found the girl “in distress” and pulled her from the water, Capt. Tony Pecelli said.
A short time later, the rescuers found a man who was submerged and pulled him from the water. After starting life-saving efforts on the beach, the Teaneck resident was brought to nearby Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Pecelli said.said the man was attempting to save his teenage daughter after she got caught in a rip current, but police didn’t immediately confirm their relationship.
