She was named the best négociant in France. Now Jane Eyre has her own winery in the village of Cissey.
Already a subscriber?In late 2020, winemaker Jane Eyre was named négociant of the year by prestigious wine magazine. The accolade was remarkable for a couple of reasons. Not only was it the first time the award had gone to a woman, but that woman was –Such industry recognition was also a long way from Eyre’s upbringing, in a town in rural Gippsland, east of Melbourne.
By now thoroughly obsessed with wine, Eyre came back to Melbourne and got a job at the Prince Wine Store as well as studying oenology at Charles Sturt University, returning to Europe every September for the harvest. Eventually, the lure of winemaking became too great, and she moved to Burgundy for good in 2004.
In 2016, when Eyre was looking to make an “entry-level” Bourgogne rouge , fruit was in scarce supply due to a frost-affected harvest. She also travels to Australia every southern-hemisphere autumn to make pinot in friends’ wineries using grapes sourced from vineyards
