Gilas Pilipinas kicked off its gold-medal redemption bid in high gear after annihilating Malaysia, 94-49 at the start of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games men's basketball on Tuesday, May 9 at the Morodok Techno National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Showing superiority and dominance, the Filipinos showed no mercy against the Malaysians after getting off to a huge 33-12 lead in the opening quarter. The boys of coach Chot Reyes did not look back. The Philippines led, 58-22 at intermission.The national squad was not threatened at all, stretching its biggest lead at 50 points en route to the smashing debut in the regional cage joust.
La Salle's energetic big man Michael Phillips also made his presence felt as he flirted with a double-double, logging in nine and a game-high 15 rebounds for Gilas.Gilas, which is on a mission to reclaim the SEA Games men's basketball throne after losing it to Indonesia last year, dominated the boards, 62-47.The Filipinos' defense was also unforgiving, turning the Malaysians' 26 turnovers to 25 points.Yi Hou Wong was the only double-figure scorer for Malaysia with 15 points.
