Martinez gets a minor-league deal, but he could provide a big boost as a reliever or as a starter.

The Giants turned to a two-time All-Star to add insurance to their starting rotation Sunday night, agreeing to a minor-league deal with former Cardinals star Carlos Martinez.

The 30-year-old Martinez will earn $2.5 million, with the potential for an additional $1.5 million in incentives, if he makes the major leagues,San Francisco, which bolstered its rotation Friday by free-agent lefty Carlos Rodon from the White Sox to a two-year, $44 million deal, would love to see Martinez regain the form that led to All-Star appearances in 2015 and 2017. However, Martinez has struggled each of the last three seasons, including last year when he pitched to a 6.

Part of Martinez’s issues in 2021 can be attributed to a thumb injury that required season-ending surgery on July 19 to fix a torn ligament. While all 19 of his appearances last year were as a starter, Martinez has been an effective reliever during his career. He saved 24 games while taking over as St. Louis’ closer in 2019 and pitching to a 3.19 ERA and a career-high tying ERA+ of 133.

For now, the Giants’ starting rotation figures to consist of righties Logan Web, Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood, and lefties Rodon and Alex Wood. A healthy Martinez, though, would be in line to become a backup rotation option, along with fellow right-hander Tyler Beede. Martinez has spent all nine seasons of his career with the Cardinals, where he went 62-52 with a 3.74 ERA and won a combined 42 games between 2015-17. Yet, his troubles the past two seasons – he had a 6.95 ERA, 5.18 FIP over a combined 102.1 innings – prompted the Cardinals to not pick up his 2021 option, making him a free agent.
