Carlos Ghosn was arrested again, this time on charges of using his position at Nissan to enrich himself unethically and unlawfully
There are people and forces who are intent on seeing former Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi CEO Carlos Ghosn do time.
Ghosn said this week by Twitter that he planned to hold a press conference next week to give his side of the story on why he was arrested and why he is being charged with several financial crimes in Japan. The case they are building against Ghosn involves a Middle Eastern businessman in Oman who Ghosn directed millions of dollars to in exchange for distribution of vehicles in the region. Prosecutors are alleging that the payments were tied to personal business Ghosn had with the man."My arrest this morning is outrageous and arbitrary," said Ghosn in a statement."It is part of another attempt by some individuals at Nissan to silence me by misleading the prosecutors.
But Ghosn's stature and reach are larger than that of the former German CEO. Ghosn was at the helm of the world’s largest auto alliance. Together, Renault, Nissan and , the third member of the alliance, sold 10.76 million passenger vehicles last year, more than any single automaker. His successful turnaround of Nissan turned him into a business and cultural superstar in Japan.
Guosn will counter that he had buy-in for all of his questionable moves by board members and those overseeing compliance. But that defense will be challenged by the fact that even board members were handpicked for their willingness to support Ghosn and were cowed by the CEO.On magazine covers, Ghosn’s exhausting work-life was often depicted as a job nobody else in the auto industry could manage or endure.
The man who regularly skated across multiple time-zones to manage a complex global concern, and who seemed tireless in public, is in for the fight of his life, with a stacked deck of the Japanese justice system leaning on him.
