USA Basketball team and coaches adjust to the rule difference in World Cup games versus NBA games.
There were 1.4 seconds left in the first half of USA Basketball's first exhibition game of its pre-World Cup tour this summer, with the Americans taking the ball out on the far end of the floor. U.S. coach Steve Kerr signaled for a quick inbounds pass and desperation heave.
And the five-game exhibition slate for the Americans, which wraps up this week in Abu Dhabi, is a chance to figure out many of those changes. "The physicality is different," U.S. forward Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic said. "You can be physical on defense in terms of redirecting your man, the way you can guard. That's the biggest thing that stands out. And a 40-minute game, it goes by quicker. In the NBA, you can be down 20 in the first quarter and not be worried because you've got time. You can ease into the game a little bit. Not here; you want to be going 100 mph from the jump.
