The fantasy drama, adapted from the successful novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapowski, debuted on Netflix in December 2019 to great anticipation, with many praising Cavill’s portrayal of antihero Geralt.
In an interview with Polish outlet Wyborcza , Bagiński discusses Cavill's departure and how The Witcher might move forward without him. Comparing the character of Geralt to the likes of James Bond and Batman, the producer addresses how the character could evolve through different iterations , as other famous characters have done. "Henry was a fantastic Geralt, but in the history of pop culture we have many actors who played the same character, and the character itself changed. I am most pleased that the series was created and became so popular. The Witcher has already reached the level of Batman, Superman and James Bond. Maybe we hoped to see him in a new version only in a few years, but it happened now. And that's nothing new for iconic pop culture heroes.
Does The Witcher Have A Future Without Cavill? While Bagiński might have a point about the character evolving, there's no doubt that Cavill's shocking Witcher exit, and the controversy surrounding it, will have hit Netflix hard. Viewers are keenly aware that the Man of Steel actor is himself a huge fan of the books and sought an active role in the show's creative direction and Geralt's development.
There may be other reasons behind Cavill's departure, with one potential factor being that the actor believed he was returning as Superman in the DCU under James Gunn, a move that did not materialize. However, the ratings plummet that The Witcher has experienced, as well as fan backlash to certain TV show changes, suggests that rumors of Cavill's dissatisfaction may not be unfounded.
