Gerakan urges the Kelantan state government to reconsider the implementation method of halal certification acquisition, proposing a moratorium for traders and categorization based on business types.

Gerakan urges the Kelantan state government to reconsider the implementation method of halal certification acquisition in the state. During a meeting between Gerakan Deputy Secretary-General Wendy Subramaniam and Kelantan State Islamic Development, Da'wah, Guidance and Inter-Religious Relations Committee Chairman, YB Mohd Asri Mat Daud, Gerakan expressed its view that the method of applying for SPHM (State Halal Processing Management) should be reviewed by the state government.

The meeting also discussed Gerakan's proposal on the implementation of halal certification requirements enforced at the Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB-BRI) level. This includes asking the local authority not to rush the implementation and instead bring back public concerns and opinions to the negotiation table. Wendy added that Gerakan also emphasized the need for a moratorium clause for traders in obtaining SPHM to allow for better preparation. The Perikatan Nasional component party also proposed the introduction of category scopes for types of businesses, meaning businesses would have specific halal classifications and consultation or premises provision fees would change according to those classifications, avoiding a blanket policy burden on entrepreneurs, said Wendy Subramaniam. Wendy Subramaniam, who is also Gerakan's Chief Information Officer, said that it is crucial for the State Government and Local Authorities to broaden the dialogue with stakeholders to achieve consensus and more inclusive implementation. Meanwhile, State Exco YB Mohd Asri Mat Daud assured that the constructive proposals brought by the Gerakan delegation, which was also attended by central leadership Lee Boon Shian and Kelantan Gerakan representative Ong Khang Woon, will be brought to the attention of the State Government Council. Asri also expressed concern that every approach by the State Government is based on the people
