Larger text size Very large text size The spectacle of men of the church being found guilty of the sexual abuse of children – once almost unthinkable – has become in recent years dispiritingly commonplace. There is, however, nothing commonplace about the conviction of George Pell. George Pell at St Marys Cathedral, Sydney in 2014.
And under Francis, Pell was elevated in 2014 to the heady inaugural post of Prefect for the Secretariat of the Economy, with authority over all the prodigious economic activities of the Holy See and the Vatican City State. From his seat in the medieval Tower of St John in the vast and dreamy Vatican Gardens, His Eminence Cardinal Pell reported directly to the Pope. That was then.
