George Lucas' true genius is demonstrated in a surprising way, one Disney can never copy. And this seriously cuts into Star Wars' profits.

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise has revolutionized how science-fiction and fantasy films are made. George Lucas is undeniably a pioneer in film-making, particularly skilled at world-building. The first Star Wars movie introduced viewers to an entire galaxy's worth of new ideas, and Lucas built upon this with the rest of the original trilogy and, later, the prequels.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, and the Star Wars galaxy has grown at an impressive rate since. The galaxy has expanded to include another trilogy, this time sequels; there have been spin-off movies, and a constant stream of live-action and animated TV shows. Despite this rapid growth, there's only one thing Disney cannot replicate when making their Star Wars content - and that’s George Lucas.

The same pattern can be seen with Lucas' other Star Wars movies. The Empire Strikes Back has an inflation-adjusted budget of $85 million, and yet made $858 million after inflation; Return of the Jedi's budget is $103 million against a box office gross of $885 million. Moving forward in time to the prequels, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is the only one of Lucas' movies with a budget of over $200 million. All are notable for their impressive profits.

Disney Can Never Reproduce Star Wars' Profits The film industry has changed, and Disney is known for spending a lot of money on their movies. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s budget was over three times the size of Return of the Jedi’s budget, and that’s after adjusting for inflation. Lucas created an elaborate and detail-oriented world, but he was able to build that world on a small budget, something that Disney simply does not have the corporate culture to pull off.

It will surely be interesting to see what the budgets and later profit margins are for the next three Star Wars films. These three movies will all be taking place at very different places in the Star Wars timeline and can help paint the future of the franchise. But they will surely be unable to work on such small budgets as the Lucas movies, which means Star Wars will never see the same kind of profit margins.
