George Lucas originally had a different plan for Darth Maul, but this version of the character would have been too similar to Darth Vader.

George Lucas' original plans for Darth Maul in the Star Wars prequel trilogy would have brought the character back, but also made him a copy of Darth Vader. After his defeat in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Maul didn't return to the franchise until Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but Lucas considered resurrecting the character years earlier. Maul very well could have appeared in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, albeit with a significant change to his character.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Lucas seems to have had a great many plans for Maul to return in different Star Wars projects, most of which never came to fruition. The canceled Star Wars video game Battle of the Sith Lords would have revolved around a clone of Maul teaming up with Darth Talon in 130 ABY.

George Lucas' Darth Maul Plans Were A Riff On Vader's Story Lucas considered having Maul turn into General Grievous, an obvious repeat of Vader's story. A Sith apprentice is cut down by Obi-Wan Kenobi, rescued and turned into a cyborg, and is even complete with breathing problems. Each Star Wars prequel villain represents Anakin's downfall in some way, but revealing that Maul and Grievous were one and the same would have been a bit much.

Even so, a version of Lucas' idea still happened through Maul's return in The Clone Wars. Maul survived and went into hiding, crafting himself robot legs and slowly going insane as his hatred for Obi-Wan grew. This led to one of the best story arcs in Star Wars, and Maul later returned in Star Wars Rebels, too. A deleted scene from Rebels even had Maul tell Ezra that Vader was what he should have been, highlighting the difference between the two characters.

Star Wars Is Like Poetry - But Some Rhymes Go Too Far Lucas stated during the making of the prequels that he wanted his Star Wars movies to rhyme like poetry, but there is such a thing as going too far. While many of Lucas' callbacks to the original trilogy were subtle and woven naturally into the story, some of them were more obvious - namely characters like Jango Fett.
