Formula 1: Lando Norris has admitted he didn't deserve to win the Hungarian Grand Prix but believes McLaren's decision to pit him first put he and Piastri in an awkward position.

Oscar Piastri says McLaren is a “ genuine chance ” of beating Red Bull Racing to the constructors championship after leading a dominant one-two finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Another two rounds scoring as heavily as it did in Hungary would see McLaren hit the lead after the Dutch Grand Prix, the first race after the August break. “Of course you’re always trying to maximise what you can do every weekend regardless of the points on offer or the championship standings, but I think it just goes to show that that’s why you try and maximise it, because you never quite know how the fortunes are going to turn.

“I think it’s one thing having results when you’ve capitalised on opportunities from others or had good circumstances, but the weekend we did purely on merit and on performance, which is everything we’ve been working towards for the last 18 months. While Red Bull Racing’s advantage is clearly reduced this year, if it’s going to go well anywhere this season, it’ll be here. With the Belgian form guide against his team, Piastri stopped short of declaring McLaren a favourite for races going forward, saying the closeness of the pack meant the pecking order would change from track to track, but he said the team had already proved it could be competitive at most circuits.
