GE Aerospace joins investigation into Boeing 737-800 crash in South Korea. South Korea extends inspections of Boeing 737-800s for a week.

GE Aerospace, whose joint venture manufactured the engines of the Boeing aircraft that crashed in the deadliest aviation disaster in South Korea n history, has joined the investigation. Seoul extended special inspections of all 101 Boeing 737-800 jets by a week following the crash of a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 that killed 179 people. The transport ministry extended the inspections to January 10th. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident.

Initial inspections were set to conclude today, but further checks will focus on whether airlines allocated sufficient time for maintenance and secured parts for repairs. Video footage on social media appears to show smoke emanating from the plane’s right engine before the crash. Sunday’s flight from Bangkok to the southwestern county of Muan belly-landed and veered off the runway at the regional airport, bursting into flames after colliding with an embankment. The ministry stated it would examine engines, maintenance records, and landing gear on all 737-800s, with severe violations potentially resulting in the suspension of an airline’s operations. The plane’s engines are produced by GE Aerospace’s CFM International joint venture with Safran. A media representative for GE Aerospace did not immediately respond to Reuters’ emailed request for comment regarding the investigation
