Though the details are shocking, this is hardly an isolated incident. Everytown, a gun safety advocacy group, estimates that, and 15,000 are shot and wounded — an average of 51 American young people every day. Homicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24 and the leading cause of death for non-Hispanic Black or African American youth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Mental health professionals and sociologists generally agree that youth violence and threats of violence are often associated withthreatening with weapons, even witnessing violent behavior such as gang-related violence. But additional factors, such as social media and the stress of pandemic isolation, also are fueling sharp increases in student anxiety, depression and aggressive behavior toward teachers and classmates.
The short answer to teen violence is to reduce the causes, stabilize families, provide coping skills and present alternatives that disconnect them from bad influences and connect them with good influences. Obviously, this is easier said than done, but the psychological and social consequences for victims, perpetrators and their families require a national commitment to double down on strategies and resources to mitigate this serious public health problem.
