The 108-degree heat multiplied exponentially with the reflection of the indwelling rays of the sun hitting the concrete of the pits of the second largest skatepark in the state of Texas.

Mendoza said he has been at that location for 13 years and this is as much criminal activity as he’s ever seen. Garland Police Lieutenant Richard Maldonado said no statistics show that criminal activity has increased in the area since the Jon Comer Skatepark opened. According to the Garland Police Department, none of this activity rises to the level of a chronic problem.

Lighting towers equipped with state-of-the-art technology allow the skatepark to be open to the public until late at night. Bureaucracy, an economic recession and a pandemic delayed the launch of the skatepark until October 2022.“It was a very long process, but it’s been worth the wait. We now have one of the best skateparks in the nation,” Garland’s mayor Scott LeMay said.“The community was actively involved in the skatepark design,” said Clinton Haley, the director of Skate Parks for Dallas, a non-profit organization working with city officials, skaters, citizens and companies to build public skateparks.
