Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jimenez, who won silver four years ago in Lima, upgraded to gold with the added bonus of an Olympic quota spot. On a busy day at the track, Canada picked up a pair of gold with Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, who won silver in the 5,000 metres, taking top spot on the podium in the 1,500m ahead of teammate Robert Heppenstal.

Brazil also came in first in the men's 4x100m relay for the sixth time in seven Games, while Cuba won the women's sprint relay for the first time since 1967. After the United States dominated Day One of freestyle wrestling, scooping all four gold medals, Cuba took over the mats on Thursday, winning three of five weight classes. Yurieski Torreblanca took the top spot on the podium in 86kg; Yusneylis Guzman won the women's 50kg; Alejandro Valdes finished at the top of the podium in the men's 65kg.
