Varys' death in Game of Thrones season 8 was disappointing to some, but the issues were rooted in changes to George R.R. Martin's books years earlier.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Varys' arc and subsequent death in Game of Thrones season 8 is seen as a downward turn for the character, but the problems started much earlier thanks to House Lannister changes to George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. Varys was one of the most important and interesting characters in Game of Thrones' early seasons.
Game Of Thrones Cut Varys Killing Kevan Lannister From The Books Kevan Lannister was never a main character in either A Song of Ice and Fire books nor Game of Thrones, but his death in the former is a lot more important. Kevan is killed by Varys and his little birds in A Dance with Dragons, Martin's fifth book in the series. At this point, Kevan is serving as regent for King Tommen Baratheon, and looking to stablize the realm after Cersei Lannister had started pushing it into chaos.
Changing Kevan Lannister's Death Had A Negative Impact On Varys' Story In some ways, it makes sense why Game of Thrones changed Varys' story and removed him killing Kevan Lannister. It was ultimately a necessity from the broader changes, mostly cutting Aegon, in order to streamline the narrative around existing characters. It also allowed for Tyrion and Varys to become travel buddies, which is one of the show's smartest and wittiest pairings.
