SAN ANTONIO — New Braunfels Canyon, the No. 1 team in the Express-News Sub-6A rankings, clashes against No. 2 Smithson Valley in Game of the Week. Here is how they match up.Smithson Valley leads 20-11The Cougars are rolling following last week’s 49-32 victory against Boerne Champion in their district opener.
Senior Xayvion Noland showed why he’s one of the area’s top receivers with 12 catches for 274 yards and scores of 59, 40, 15 and 12 yards. He leads area receivers with 683 yards and nine touchdowns on 33 catches. Junior quarterback Deuce Adams passed for 432 yards and five touchdowns and leads area passers with 1,330 yards.The Rangers opened district play with a hard-fought 21-13 victory against Wagner. Quarterback Chase Senelick completed 8 of 10 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns.
The Rangers have wins against East Central and Wagner since losing against Killeen Harker Heights 27-13 three week ago. Smithson Valley opened the season with a 14-13 win against Reagan.Canyon is looking for its first 5-0 start since 2006 when it began 6-0 before finishing 7-3. … The Rangers have defeated Canyon 17 times in a row. The Cougars last defeated Smithson Valley in 1995 .
