A high-profile man facing two rape charges in Toowoomba in October 2021 has been granted an interim non-publication order ahead of new laws starting next week.

has been granted an interim non-publication order only days before new Queensland laws come into effect that would have allowed him to be identified.

Supreme Court Justice Peter Applegarth granted the order, acknowledging under the new laws, media organisations could have published stories identifying the man anytime after midnight on Monday, before a formal non-publication order could have been lodged in the court on Tuesday morning. “It will take some time for the application for the interim order to be heard and determined,” he said.

The man, who remained on bail and had not been required to appear in the courtroom, faces two charges of rape from alleged events in Toowoomba in October 2021. When passing the laws, Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath told parliament that arguments about sexual offence complaints being trivial or often falsified “had no place in our society”.
