and the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi , Datau ruminates on how she developed her own fashion sensibility. “If there’s a rip in my sweater, I’ll mend it myself with crazy colored thread. It becomes beautiful, even if it’s a flaw,” she says., music played a huge part in Datau’s formative years. “Riot Grrrl was my gateway drug to feminism,” Datau says.

With Indonesian parents, growing up as a person of color in a predominantly white neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, Datau says she “felt a little bit displaced. I never really felt a sense of community — I was always a little angry and confused about it because I never saw representation. Music and fashion were ways to express those feelings.” In college at CalArts, she was in a surf punk band called Sandy Pussy as well as other punk metal bands..

Datau continues to feed on the emerging fashion and art community in Los Angeles, where she works with Murmurs Gallery on programming artist initiatives. An event she organized recently brought together Poche alongside independent local designers
