Despite being vindicated, Faloon didn’t take charge of the game in any event and after Meath referee David Gough declined to replace him, Annaclone’s Brian Higgins stepped into the breach.
Down county board has requested GAA director general Tom Ryan to establish a review of the controversial episode surrounding the refereeing of last Sunday’s county final.
Kilcoo, who eventually went on to beat Burren in the final by nine points, objected to the appointment of Paul Faloon to referee the game and brought the matter all the way to the Disputes Resolution Authority, without success. Down subsequently defended Faloon and said that Kilcoo’s objection was “entirely baseless”, insisting that there should be “no right of appeal against the appointment of a referee” while considering its options to “ensure that this never happens again”.
Arising from that, county board secretary Sean Og McAteer has contacted Ryan, requesting that he “establish an independent review of this episode”, which the director general has agreed to. In the meantime, there have been unconfirmed reports that Down referees are considering strike action, with Sunday’s county senior hurling final between Portaferry and Ballycran among the fixtures this coming weekend.
