Low budget horror spoof with cast of 10s was once regarded as the worst film ever made but is now a cult classic
Forty-six years ago giant mutant tomatoes met their demise at San Diego Stadium during the March 26, 1977 filming of the finale of a low-budget horror spoof called “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!” by three former Bonita Vista High students, John DeBello, Steve Peace and Costa Dillon. Released in 1978, Killer Tomatoes later spawned three sequels, a TV cartoon and other spinoffs.
Peace, in a jumpsuit with his chest criss-crossed by bandoliers and dragging an opened chute behind him like a bridal train, is one of three old grads of Bonita Vista High School who, fortunately, or unfortunately, dreamed up the idea of a spoof of Japanese monster flicks. They stalk human prey, getting even for thousands of years of their next of kin have spent being boiled, stewed, hacked into quarters and devoured by everybody from Neanderthal men to the girl next door.
The scene being filmed is the next to final advance of the deranged tomatoes on this unnamed Southern California city.
