Perth's grand GPO was completed 100 years ago, but it took until the 1980s for the designers' full vision to be realised.
abc.net.au/news/perth-gpo-building-100-year-old-history/102852678September 26, 2023 will mark 100 years since the opening of the imposing Perth GPO building, which overlooks Forrest Place and stands opposite Perth Railway Station.
Construction began in 1915 and took eight years to complete, thanks to the size of the building and the difficult terrain."The land was very swampy that it was built on, and because of this and the massive size of the building, they actually had to put about 1,600 jarrah poles — which were between 6 and 9 metres in length — into the ground, the foundations of the building, just because it was a huge building," Ms Lawrie said.
"I worked at the GPO after high school for a year in 1987 and I do remember they had lots of public telephones, and they were always in use," Damien Hassan, senior archivist for the WA State Record Office, said. For one ABC listener, the GPO holds special memories of migrating to Perth from Scotland."[We had] no home telephone and public phones did not accept coins for international calls.
"That aerial was removed during World War II, because it presented too great a target for a potential aerial bomb."The completion of the GPO also saw the creation of a street in front of the building, linking Murray and Wellington streets and named Forrest Place after Sir John Forrest, the first premier of Western Australia.
"But then when plans were released in 1913 by the Commonwealth, the Perth lord mayor is just outraged because the size of the space has been dramatically reduced.
