Five weeks ago Adam Spencer had no idea he was going to Budapest. Now, the Australian middle-distance runner is into the semi-finals at the World Championships he never thought he’d be at.
Spencer, a former Wesley student from McKinnon in Melbourne’s south-east, who now studies at the University of Wisconsin, thought his chance of getting a start in a race to get the world championships qualifying time had passed. That was until he got a phone call asking if he wanted to take Hoare’s place at a Diamond League meet in London. He didn’t hesitate.
“With 400 [metres] to go I was like ‘right I’m with the main pack, so go with it and have a crack’,” he said.“Just go for it, I’ve got nothing to lose, get a spot in the top six and I’m sure it is going to be fast ... but top six is the goal,” he said. Hall was joined by Jess Hull, a strong medal contender in Budapest, and emerging star Abbey Caldwell, the trio’s performances reinforcing the strength of Australian middle-distance running.
