It’s been 68 years since the first transplant, when a man gave his twin one of his kidneys. While transplant science has come a long way, transplant needs are endless.

Leslie Kouba is a community columnist for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. January 14, 2022CLEVELAND, Ohio – Years ago, I was afraid to designate myself as an organ donor. You see, I thought that if medical personnel knew I was willing to donate my organs, they might slack off on saving my life, and my young children needed me. Silly and wrong, but those are the facts of my ignorance.

That very long waiting list continuously grows; another name is added every 10 minutes. The vast majority are waiting for a kidney, which is the organ in highest demand, dead or alive. Yes – living donors can give a kidney and still enjoy the same life expectancy, because a solo kidney can get the job done just fine.

Another challenge is the lack of donors. Even though 90% of us think organ donation is a good idea, only about 60% of us are actually registered to donate. Registering is the most efficient way to activate the, the hub of organ matchmaking, where timing is everything. Here’s the bottom line: One deceased donor can save the life of eight people and improve the lives of about 75 additional people. Now that’s a good exchange rate, people.

Most of us know the typical transplant organs – heart, kidneys, lungs, liver and pancreas. But there’s also the intestines, uterus and stomach. And there are numerous tissues to share, such as ligaments, tendons, bones, skin, abdominal wall lining, blood-making cells, heart valves and corneas. I think the most dramatic and fascinating transplants are the complicated Vascularized Composite Allograft transplants of arms, faces, hands, and genitalia. I included the name for nerds like me.
