For many, the idea of success or failure in sport is very simple - you either win the championship, or you wasted the season.
But clearly there must be more nuance than that. So many factors contribute to the expectations surrounding an AFL club; from how they’ve built their team and what assets they’ve spent or saved, to how recently they’ve actually had success.One side’s disappointing early finals exit is another group’s exciting return to September; one team’s realistic shot at a flag is another outfit’s impossible dream.
And so, as we take an early look ahead to next season and give every team a pass mark, all of that context must be taken into account. Collingwood, clearly, will be hoping to repeat as premiers... but as Geelong, a much more dominant home and away side on route to their flag, just showed that’s very difficult. Expecting the best possible outcome is setting yourself up for disappointment, and often unrealistic.The Crows should’ve passed this in 2023, with the goal review blunder in their late-season loss to Sydney costing them a spot in the finals .
