His friends said Jesdanun gently encouraged them to enter new races. After Tozar joined the Flyers, he convinced her to run her first marathon,in 2013. After her second New York in 2014, he naturally assumed she would run Philadelphia three weeks later. Why wouldn’t she? One memorable trip was a 2017 journey in southern Africa with Jesdanun and four other Flyers, who ran the Victoria Falls Marathon in Zimbabwe and made stops in South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia. The day before the marathon they waited in line for a gorge swing. “It was the best and worst marathon prep ever,” Mihalko said. “It was like a bungee jump. They put you in this harness, you are on a platform and free falling for a few seconds. All of our adrenaline was used up there.
But it was never about the times. Running for him was about meeting people, traveling, and enjoying the little things, like a burger and a microbrew.
