The Dodgers’ latest big acquisition arrived at camp for the first time Friday after his free agency came to an unexpected conclusion.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Freddie Freeman entered his blue period wearing a dark-pinstriped suit and tie and carrying his glove, overdressed for his first day at a new job as he arrived at Camelback Ranch on Friday morning.
Later in the day, Freeman acknowledged he had already learned something about the Dodgers from his reception. “I started having my doubts probably last spring training,” Freeman said. “I didn’t get any calls last offseason, didn’t really get any calls last spring training either. So … I was pretty sure I was going to be a free agent. You still think you’re going to come back at that point. But the doubts started to go when the phone didn’t ring. I can’t control someone wanting to call. I got one call before the lockout, a checking-in call. And that was it.
Freeman said he never expected to reach free agency – and neither did any of Freeman’s potential suitors. “Doc, JT and I walked outside like 10 minutes before the deadline and before everything went dark and said ‘Hey, don’t forget about us. During this period, don’t forget about us,’” Friedman said.Roberts recalled making the call – sort of.
“I don’t know – maybe it felt like a lot to him compared to some of the phone calls he was getting,” Turner said. “Just reaching out to him and telling him how good he would look in Dodger blue and how fun it would be to play together on the same team. We’ve played against each other for a long time.
