We chat with OneDayAsALion star Frank Grillo about adding comedy into his action, collaborating with director John Swab, and the secret to his film choices:
Lionsgate's newest action comedy, One Day as a Lion, even has a bit of romance going for it. But the multifaceted film's real strength is the group of creatives who came together to make it happen. Directed by John Swab from a screenplay by Scott Caan, who stars in the project as well, One Day as a Lion follows Jackie Powers as he messes up a hit job in pursuit of a higher calling.
I know you and John have collaborated often in the past. What draws you back to that partnership, and what do you like best about working with him? Frank Grillo: I usually read the script, at least 30-40 times. There's usually a script in each room in my house, just to sit down and pick up somewhere. I always extrapolate from what the writer has given, not only for my character, but the other characters too. I put the world together, and that's how I prepare.
Frank Grilllo: There are two films that inspire me tremendously, and that are my go-to films. One of them is Heat, and the other one is Taxi Driver. Taxi Driver truly focuses on the inside of a human being's brain, and you're seeing the world from there. Heat is the opposite. It's just an ensemble of greatness, and it's executed in a way that blows your mind. I know they're gonna make another one, but I wish they wouldn't.
