France reports its first case of the clade 1b Monkeypox variant, raising concerns about the virus's spread beyond Africa.
PARIS: The French Ministry of Health has confirmed the first case of infection with the new Monkeypox ( Mpox ) variant. The patient has no history of travel to Central Africa, the origin of the virus. However, the individual is believed to have had close contact with two people who had recently returned from the region, according to AFP.
Health authorities are currently investigating the source of the infection and actively identifying all close contacts to control the spread of the virus, according to a statement. According to a regional French newspaper, Ouest France, the patient is a woman who received treatment at a hospital in Rennes, in the northwestern region of Brittany. The new mpox variant, known as the clade 1b variant, was previously linked to the global health emergency declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) last August. Germany and Britain each reported their first cases of the variant last October. The virus, which originated in Africa, is now spreading to other continents such as America, West Asia, and now Europe. -AGENC
