Interim District 7 Councilwoman Rosie Castro said she is hearing the most support for Marina Alderete Gavito, a candidate with a long history of community involvement and a family history in San Antonio politics.
City Council District 17 candidate Dan Rossiter participates in a candidate forum hosted by the Asian American Alliance of San Antoni at the Fire Fighters Hall on Saturday morning. Marina Alderete Gavito wasn’t planning to run for the District 7 seat — at least not yet.
Gavito’s father is former District 7 Councilman Joe Alderete, who is a one-time City Council ally of Mayor Henry Cisneros in the 1980s and is now an Alamo Colleges trustee. Her mother is Chris Alderete, a former chairwoman of Port San Antonio’s board of directors. They are joined on the ballot by two others who have been active through the campaign season — Sandragrace Martinez and Jacob Chapa. Candidate Andrew “AJ” Luck, a U.S. Navy veteran, has been quiet leading up to the election.
Gavito, Rossiter, Martinez and Chapa all oppose Proposition A, a controversial charter amendment on the ballot. It would decriminalize abortion and marijuana, expand cite-and-release and ban some policing techniques. It also would create a citywide justice director.
