A historical marker describing the hanging of 19 African American soldiers is dedicated at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday. The sloppiness of the trials that resulted in their convictions for a deadly Houston riot in 1917 is now the focus of a clemency petition. A short walk from the soldiers’ graves, Matthew Quinn, a Veterans Affairs Department undersecretary, stood before a crowd of around 50 people, some in the uniforms worn of the Army’s famed Buffalo Soldiers, and struck a theme others would echo: the effort underway to right old wrongs. “The men did not get due process,” said Angela Holder, a Houston Community College history professor and descendant of Cpl. Jesse Moore, who was among the first to be executed. “They did not get a chance to get an appeal on their case.
