The Buffalos, coached by Lloyd Banks, have won six state championships since 2015.
“The winning culture at Marshall is everything,” Davis said. “We have a thing — look good, feel good, run good, and that’s exactly what they do. They make sure we’re feeling the best and that we’re fully prepared to go in with a level-headed mindset to win races. They coach us to win, and they coach us to hold composure. I’m very excited about being a part of the program the last four years.”
This time around, the Buffs clocked in at 40.71 and took the bronze behind Red Oak and Frisco Lone Star . Despite missing the gold, the team of Davis, Devin Wilkerson, William Mitchell and Williams still put points on the board toward their primary goal.“The 110s are my premiere event,” Davis said. “Coming into this race, I really wanted to execute and come out with the gold because the last two years, I’ve come to state in 110s and came up short.
“It’s so exciting for me,” Haynes said. “This is my first time. I’ve never been to state, and I’m so happy. I’m proud of my times, and it was the most exciting thing ever. … This means so much for me to represent my school. I’ve come a long way, and to be the first wheelchair athlete from my school is amazing.”Laila Payne wasn’t just focused on winning gold. She wanted to run a time she was proud of.
So when both of the Friendswood throwers ended up on the podium at the UIL state track and field championships, it was a rewarding moment for the talented duo. Archundia competed in the discus at state last season and finished fifth. He earned the silver medal in that event as a sophomore. Coming back with a different focus this year ended up being a rewarding experience as he closed his prep career with a medal draped around his neck. It meant even more doing it alongside his teammate.
