Bob Mulcahy has been credited with helping build the Rutgers athletics program to a point where it would eventually be invited to the Big Ten.
“The entire Rutgers community is saddened to hear the news of Bob Mulcahy’s passing,” Rutgers athletics director Pat Hobbs said in a statement. “Bob was an extraordinary man who led an extraordinary life. He was one of those rare individuals who balanced being a great husband, father and grandfather, with being a man of public service and a friend to many. I know how much Rutgers meant to Bob and his family and how much his legacy means to the history of our athletic department.
Rutgers was rewarded for that faith in 2005, when Schiano led the Scarlet Knights to a bowl berth for the first time since 1978. A year later, Rutgers reached the high-water mark as a program in 2006, when Schiano led the Scarlet Knights to a top-10 ranking in the polls, a Texas Bowl trophy and an 11-2 record overall.
Mulcahy was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and into the the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2020. In 2021, he chronicled a Rutgers experience that included his controversial firing in his book, “An Athletic Director’s Story and the Future of College Sports in America.’’
