A fierce factional battle is emerging over the late Jim Molan’s vacant Senate seat with one former Liberal prime minister urged to make a shock return to Parliament.
Senator Molan, a former army major general, died on Monday aged 72 after an almost two-year long battle with cancer.
Former Victorian Liberal Party president Michael Kroger said Mr Abbott was a “fairly obvious” choice to replace Senator Molan’s immense experience. He said Mr Abbott, 65, could provide much needed guidance to Federal Liberal leader Peter Dutton and to the party’s junior ranks. But fellow NSW Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes dismissed the conservative faction’s push to replace Molan.
