Chan Peng Soon, a former Olympic silver medalist in badminton, believes the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) proposed return to a 15-point format will revitalize the sport. He argues that the change will benefit players, particularly veterans, by reducing physical strain and potentially extending their careers. Peng Soon also anticipates that the new system will add excitement for spectators by making matches more dynamic.
Peng Soon: ‘I believe many are tired of the current scoring system, as it has been in use for so long.’
Peng Soon welcomed the move, saying badminton has evolved over the years, and the revamped scoring system will not only add a new dimension for players but also make matches more thrilling for spectators. “The 21-point format is more physically demanding and fast-paced. If implemented correctly, the new system might be a good change, as it could work to the players’ advantage.
“I don’t think this change will drastically alter playing strategies or eliminate long rallies. However, it should reduce fatigue since the new system is capped at 21 points, unlike the current format, which can stretch to 30 points in the event of a deuce.
