Former Republican candidate for governor and retired corrections officer Stacy Lee George spoke out this week about conditions at Limestone Correctional Facility, the Alabama prison where he worked until last month. See the link for ADOC' response.

His wife, Karen, joined him for the press conference at the Capitol. George has resigned from his job and said he wants to tell the public how dangerous conditions are in Alabama prisons. “There could be eight or 10 officers, maybe 12 at times,” said George of the numbers that are well below what he says are needed. “You’re looking at eight officers and two nurses trying to take care of 2,300 inmates. One for segregation and one for population. Medications, no telling when you get it. Sometimes food, no telling when you’re going to get it. Sometimes we don’t even have soap.
“Staffing is the subject of ongoing litigation and court orders,” the ADOC said. “Additionally, disclosure of specific staff numbers at a facility creates the risk of a security issue. For these reasons, the Department is unable to comment on specific staff numbers and/or implications. The state has acknowledged problems in it prisons, including severe understaffing, but denies that conditions violate the constitution.
Hamm said the ADOC struggled to compete for job candidates against other law enforcement agencies that have higher starting pay.
