'After more than a year of listening to Alabama’s citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow. I am humbled to announce the next step -- I will be a @GOP candidate for US Senate. I invite you to join my team,' Tuberville posted to Twitter.

Tuberville, who served as head football coach for Auburn University from 1998 to 2008, announced Saturday that he intends to challenge Alabama Sen. Doug Jones for his seat in 2020.

Tuberville spent 21 seasons coaching football, including stops at the University of Mississippi, Texas Tech and the University of Cincinnati. His most successful coaching tenure came at Auburn where Tuberville led the Tigers to an 85-40 record and eight consecutive bowl game appearances. Tuberville was named SEC Coach of the year twice, in 1997 and 2004, and also earned Associated Press Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after Auburn finished the season 13-0 and ranked No.

"I want things to get better. It seems like we have no plan and no vision for the future. We kinda live year by year, and I'm tired of us losing. We're not winning. We win in football in this state. People won a lot of championships, but we can't get out of the cellar in state government," Tuberville said.
