"Deacon was an invaluable part of our organization and a close friend to every member of the Sugar Land front office and community," Sugar Land Space Cowboys general manager Tyler Stamm said in a statement released by the team."We've lost a pillar of our organization and a dear friend who is wholly responsible for all of us being here. After his playing career, Jones worked in baseball as a scout and coach. He was the Astros' hitting coach under manager Bill Virdon from 1976 to 1982, which included the franchise's first two trips to the postseason. He also was the Padres hitting coach before spending two decades as a White Sox scout.
