Airlines for Australia and New Zealand Chair Graeme Samuel has outlined a potential process for Bonza to re-enter the market after it entered voluntary administration.

A leading figure in Australia's airline industry has outlined a potential process for Bonza to re-enter the market after budget carrier entered voluntary administration.

Mr Samuel said one of the potential causes for Bonza’s business bow out was that the company picked up regional routes that were not being serviced by “anyone else”. The former ACCC chair said Bonza had only been flying to one major airport in Australia - Melbourne - because the airline could not negotiate with them.

The A4ANZ boss said Bonza was given a concessionary deal, “a honeymoon type deal”, when it was established but had been told the airline would be charged “whatever we want” by airports as those deals came to an end. “ pricing principles basically say ‘airports must negotiate in good faith with airlines and in the event of an intractable dispute, it should go to an expert commercial arbitrator for resolution, not to the courts. That's legal fees. And you can spend years in that. No, go to a commercial arbitrator and he or she will resolve it in a matter of two or three months.”
