A foreign worker tragically lost his life in a construction accident in Simpang Ampat, Penang, last Monday. The incident occurred when a zinc roof, being lifted from a lorry by a crane to the building structure, became detached from its hook and crashed onto the worker.
Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director Hairozie Asri confirmed the details, stating that the 28-year-old victim was employed by a subcontractor tasked with installing the roof of a multipurpose building. According to Hairozie, the fatal accident happened when the rope securing the roof to the crane's hook snapped, causing the heavy metal sheet to plummet onto the worker. The severely injured individual was rushed to a nearby hospital but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. Following the incident, DOSH immediately issued a stop work order at the construction site, demanding a thorough internal investigation by the victim's employer. The employer is required to identify the root cause of the accident and present a detailed report to DOSH. DOSH will conduct a comprehensive follow-up investigation, collecting relevant documents and evidence. If any violations of occupational safety regulations are uncovered, legal action will be taken against the responsible parties
