How your local golf course prepares for weather:
Next week the pros will take on Augusta National at The Masters. And while it may come as no surprise that the tour officials and planners are actively monitoring the weather and how it might impact the course, golfers and spectators, it may surprise you to know that your local course likely relies on the same expert weather insights throughout the year.
Driving through town on a summer day you might get a peek at a golf course and wonder how the grass is always green and lush. It all stems from the talented grounds staff, typically managed by a golf course superintendent. To achieve the best course conditions, golf course superintendents usually hold degrees in agronomy or turf grass science. Given this background they are aware that nearly all the decisions they make, even in the off-season, must consider the impact of weather.
There are weather forecasting tools available that have the ability to plug in the parameters of the specific product being sprayed to show the best times to apply that product. When Mother Nature doesn’t bring rain, it is no surprise that golf courses turn to irrigation to keep the turf looking pristine. Ideally, most types of grass require around a tenth of an inch of rain per day. The green and grounds staff will use observed rain and forecast rain amounts to manage the sprinkler system.
It makes sense that a golf course superintendent, much like a farmer, actively watches the weather to determine how the grass will grow and perform, however they aren’t the only ones.
