The Journal officiel de la République française has announced permission for flying taxis during the Paris 2024 Olympics . The Aéroports de Paris group will oversee the project, operating from Vertiport de Paris-Austerlitz. Only Volocopter, an aircraft manufacturer from Germany, is allowed to operate the Volocity flying taxi during the event.
For your information, the order allows the heliport to function until December 31, 2024, but local authorities including Paris City Hall have voiced concerns about noise pollution and environmental impact, planning legal action against V0locity. Patrice Vergriete, Minister of the French Transport Delegation stated that the government will assess the impact and feasibility of integrating flying taxis into the urban transport system based on test flights during the Olympic Games.
In addition, Volocopter is currently seeking certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and has conducted tests at Pontoise Airport. The aim is to facilitate fast transport between important locations such as Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, Le Bourget and central Paris with each flight limited to specific operating hours and limited flight frequency.
Moreover, the French Environment Authority has voiced concerns about the noise and high electricity consumption of the Volocity which can only carry one passenger and one pilot. Despite these concerns, Volocopter has completed a test flight in France and plans to expand its operations to cities such as Rome, Osaka and NEOM in Saudi Arabia after the Paris 2024 Olympics.
