Reform-minded campaigns are emphasizing that change begins with often-neglected prosecutor races

OAKLAND, Calif. — The widespread fury over George Floyd's death provides a sudden window of opportunity for a national movement that has tried for years to remake the criminal justice landscape through high-profile prosecutor races around the country.

A constellation of political action committees is “looking everywhere right now” as organizers weigh where to deploy resources, Justice & Public Safety PAC president Whitney Tymas said in an interview. The network largely funded by Soros has spent millions to back progressives in recent cycles, including some $4 million in Texas and California alone ahead of 2018 votes.

No contest has more criminal justice implications than the race for Los Angeles district attorney, which pits former San Francisco prosecutor George Gascón against incumbent Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey to determine who will oversee a massive jurisdiction of 10 million residents where law enforcement has a fraught history of excessive force.

“George Gascón is talking about this issue now because it's politically advantageous to him — I've been living it since I was an eight year old girl living in South L.A. during the Watts riots,” Lacey said in a statement. Florida voters will also have multiple opportunities to swap out prosecutors. The dynamic of a reformist challenger versus an entrenched incumbent prosecutor is on full display in Miami, where former ACLU attorney Melba Pearson is challenging longtime Democratic State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle from the left. Pearson launched her campaign by accusing her opponent of “pursuing Reagan-era policies and prosecutorial policies we know do not work.
