Ellen Gilland, 76, is being held in jail without bond after fatally shooting her 76-year-old husband, Jerry Gilland, at a hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla.
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — A 76-year-old woman is facing a murder charge after authorities say she shot and killed her terminally ill husband in a hospital room, reportedly part of a pact between the couple.
A judge on Sunday ordered that Ellen Gilland of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., be held in the Volusia County Jail without bond,. Gilland is charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records. Officers on Saturday were called to Advent Health Hospital at about 11:35 a.m. on reports that a patient had been shot, police say. When they arrived, Ellen Gilland reportedly had confined herself in her husband’s hospital room.
Gilland was taken into custody by police after about a four-hour standoff, reports say, using a flash bang and a taser to get her to drop a gun she was holding.
